We met again at the Zaglembie Memorial site in Modi'in for the annual ceremony of planting new trees on the Plants New Year (Tu Bishvat) to celebrate.
There were no actual plantings this year as it is a year of Shmita, the seventh year in a seven-year cycle during which land in Israel must lie fallow and debts are canceled. Still we had a lively ceremony orchestrated by that Rina and Shimon Nitani.
We sang Israeli songs, blessed the dried fruits of our land – even though some of them come to us from Turkey...We blessed the wine, olive oil, barley and wheat. There were tasty home baked cakes. We had all. The children had a musical activity with a drummer that fascinated them.
